Did giants exist? No, they did not, but there’s still some interesting stories about them. Lovelock cave is a cave in Lovelock, Nevada that’s most well known for the “Giants” inhabiting the cave, which is most likely false. Let’s take a step back and paint a picture of the situation.
According to Northern Paiute folklore, (who historically inhabited the Great Basin), there was once a tribe of red-headed cannibalistic giants called the Si-Te-Cah (Tule Eaters). According to the story, the Paiute and Si-Te-Cah were at war. Eventually the Paiute trapped the Si-Te-Cah in Lovelock Cave, and then built a fire in front of the cave. Those who attempted to escape were quickly shot down with arrows. This has led to many people in pseudoscience communities, and many people who create clickbaits to claim that giants existed, which has been proven false. Multiple items were found in Lovelock cave, none of which were giant skeletons. The items include: Duck Decoys, a winnowing tray, a woven basket fragment, an ancient stone smoke pipe, and Tule duck decoys, to name a few.
The tallest skeleton found there was a 6’6 male skeleton, which is taller than the average human, especially for the time it was discovered, but definitely not giant. When people speak about “Ancient Giants” they are trying to say there was a species or race of gigantic people, which is definitely false, and if there is one thing I hate more than anything it is misinformation.
It’s important, as anyone reading anything online, to be able to tell real from fake, and especially to research what you are told about, even from people who seem like important and true sources. In this age of information and misinformation, where a majority of content online are AI, bots, false news and fake headlines, you need to be able to research the things you find online. The next time someone tells you something online, take the five seconds out of your day to make sure you aren’t spreading misinformation.
