A24 is quickly becoming a favorite production company of many. With the company making huge strides a few years after first starting up. A24 was founded by Daniel Katz, David Fenkel, and John Hodegs in 2012. At first the company specialized in only the distribution of films. Even then, A24 was able to get the worldwide rights to Robert Egger’s directorial debut film The Witch in 2015 which was then followed up the next year with Barry Jenkins’s Moonlight. Moonlight was A24’s first biggest hit with them helping to produce the film and then later it won 3 Oscars including the Academy Award for Best Picture. For as long as the company has really been around, they have taken a chance on films that seem too artsy or are too slow with their plot that another studio may reject for not seeming financially worth it in the end. But, for A24 taking in these types of films or shows have been what they now are known for and what makes them loved by fans. Plus, their films have box office hits before, look at 2025 with Marty Supreme, so this business model has made people interested in films that would have not been picked up by other studios with as large a presence. So, that is what made A24’s announcement of Kane Parsons’s Backrooms film so interesting.
Kane Parson is a film maker whose biggest project ever put to screen was his series called the Backrooms. The series was a huge success for the 17 year old at the time whose first episode right now sits at 71 million views on YouTube alone. The idea of the Backrooms itself came from a creepypasta concept of being stuck in a never ending maze of pasty yellow walls and a carpet floor. Parson took the idea and added a story to the original concept and brought it to life with his amazing modeling and animation in Adobe After Effects to give it its now trademarked style. With the recognition the first episode garnered, Parson now has created multiple episodes following a story that had intrigued those who fell in love with the concept. The Backrooms really helped make the genre on YouTube known as analog horror really pop to a newer audience. For a lot of young people this is their Local 58 or Gemini Home Entertainment. However even those series didn’t compare to the real splash to the Backrooms success. Seen especially now with the production of the Backrooms film now being in full and having a release date.
From the talk about A24 earlier in this, A24 is the one helping produce and bring Parson’s vision to an even bigger screen in theaters. The film will star Renate Reinsve, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mark Duplass, Fin Bennett, and many more. This film is due for release on May 29th of this year. So what? That may be a question that is being raised by those online. “It’s just another concept brought to life with A24 to help make another artsy film” is an argument that might be thrown out there. However, this production of Parson’s creation put to a bigger screen shows other independent artists that their field isn’t limited. Even though analog horror isn’t the biggest genre of horror online, other artsy horror films like Skinamarink in 2022 did the same thing and helped push a new way of showing horror on the big screen. Horror should never be limited and Parson is showing that again with this up and coming film.
