On December 25, 2025, the movie that had been plaguing many people’s feeds had come out. That movie is Marty Supreme. Before anything even came out about the movie, movie fans were already anticipating this film due to who was directing it. Josh Safdie hadn’t made a film since 2019 and wasn’t working with his brother, Benny Safdie, who had worked on every movie with him in the past. This left fans to wonder, who is the better director overall when working alone? This was answered very quickly after the release of Marty Supreme.
In the simplest description for the film, Marty Supreme is about a man, Marty Mauser, who aspires to be the world’s best table-tennis player during the 1950s. During the film, Mauser jumps through many insane obstacles to achieve that dream. Besides the director however, many non-movie fans were also pulled into Marty Supreme from the intense marketing before the film was released.
The lead actor for this movie is Timothée Chalamet, who is one of the most popular actors of late and is loved by gen z. Chalamet had spoken openly about how he believed this was his best role and one he was very proud to play. So in order to get as many eyes on the film as he could, Chalamet tapped into that gen z following he had in order to market the film. He did this by collaborating with many online influencers, an orange blimp over the Hollywood sign, standing on the Las Vegas Sphere, dropping very exclusive clothing and then appearing for the pop up with multiple men dressed as ping pong balls.
This doesn’t even include the song he dropped with UK rapper, EsDeeKid, after many online rumors discussing that the two may in fact be the same person. This alone brought even more hype to the film. These stunts could be ruled out as insane however it worked. The film was being talked about more and more, these events made many more excited for what the film was even going to entail. Even then, there are more marketing stunts that went into this film that even further contributed to this film’s success.
So was it really worth all this hype? I think so, as do many critics that have been waiting for this film’s release. Without going into too much detail, this movie feels like one big rush against time in the best way possible. There are so many subplot lines that are happening in the duration of the runtime that it is genuinely perplexing how there is no point where it feels over done. This movie balances so many different tones and does it all in a way that just makes so much sense. The movie looks beautiful and has such fun shots sprinkled throughout. If there’s anything else I could say I’ll say this: if you haven’t watched Marty Supreme just go do it and if you have a rewatch it is worth it.
