Current Pro-Palestinian Student Protests

Current Pro-Palestinian Student Protests

Students from Columbia University, a reputable Ivy League college, have taken a stand for Palestinian people due to the Israeli-Palestinian War.

Protests have swamped the campus of Columbia University for two weeks now in support of Palestine. Students are encamping on the school grounds, while their professors and school staff lock arms to protect the protestors. Due to the abundance of protestors on the campus, school representatives have made attempts to cooperate and come to an agreement. However, protestors refuse to face intimidation and stand firm.

On Monday, April 29, 2024, students were asked to remove their encampment and belongings from the Columbia University grounds. Intelligent students who stress over assignment deadlines surely are not phased by those concerning their protests. The students had till 2:00 P.M. to do so, but protestors disagreed and remained resilient. Due to the relentless demonstrations, the school has threatened protestors with a suspension from the university.

These protests are not only happening at Columbia University, but also various other schools such as New York University and the University of Texas. At the campus of the University of Texas, police forces are beginning to get involved. It was reported that officers began to surround 80 protesters at the university, zip-tying their wrists as a form of arrest. Consecutively after Columbia University, N.Y.U. began to have pro-Palestinian protests of their own. School officials stated that if these acts continue, “disciplinary processes” will result.

These protests are spreading across the nation in both the Southern and Northern United States. This widespread advocation shows the determination pro-Palestinian students hold, and how they will refuse to back down no matter the cost. Overall, there is no knowledge of how long the protests will continue, however there is no doubt that students will continue to protest for some time to come.
