On September 8, 2017, Mexico had an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.1. This earthquake occurred in Mexico City and Guatemala City. Mexico hasn’t experienced an earthquake this strong in 32 years. In 1985, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake killed an estimate of 9,500 people in and around Mexico City. The earthquake hit when most people were sleeping.  Chiapas and Oaxaca was  the two cities that were hit the hardest because they are located closest to the earthquake’s epicenter. In Oaxaca, 45 people were killed. In Chiapas state, 10 others died and 3 in Tabasco. There was multiple aftershocks, including at least six with tremors measuring above 5.0 in magnitude. The quakes depth was 43 miles, which means more intense shaking. A tsunami was confirmed in Mexico with one wave in at 3 feet. Tsunami waves taller than 10 feet could hit the coast of Mexico, while 3-foot waves could reach as far as Ecuador, New Zealand and Vanuato. On September 19,2017, Mexico had another earthquake with 7.1 magnitude. At least 225 people were killed, 32 buildings collapsed, and 52 people were rescued alive. Many people took shelter after losing their homes. The schools closed indefinitely and millions of people were left without power. When one of the buildings collapsed, there was 4 people who got stuck. They feared they would run out of air, but they kept their faith. There are so many people willing to help the victims in Mexico by donating money, but unfortunately it will be a very long time before they get back on their feet.
